Kigali, 4 June 2025 (SPS) – Morocco has once again failed in its attempt to secure positions within the African Union (AU). On Wednesday, its candidate was disqualified in elections held in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, for the position of Director-General of the African Medicines Agency (AMA).
The vote resulted in the elimination of Morocco’s candidate, Bouchra Meddah, in favor of Ghana’s Delese Mimi Darko. This marks the fifth consecutive diplomatic setback for the Makhzen regime in 2025. The series of failures began with two rounds of elections to select a Northern region member for a seat on the Peace and Security Council, followed by a third defeat during the African Summit last February when its candidate, Latifa Akharbach, lost the race for Vice-President of the African Commission.
A week ago, Morocco suffered its fourth diplomatic blow in its bid for the Nelson Mandela Prize, which was awarded instead to Amina Bouayach, head of its National Human Rights Council (CNDH), in a global competition organized by the United Nations. Despite deploying its usual diplomatic and intelligence resources to secure the prize—given its symbolic and humanitarian significance—Morocco was unsuccessful.
Today, history repeats itself for the fifth time with the disqualification of the Kingdom’s candidate for the AMA Director-General position.
These successive failures have exposed the falseness of Morocco’s propaganda and the precarious situation it faces due to its illegal and ongoing occupation of Western Sahara. They also demonstrate that the vast sums spent by the Makhzen to buy influence—aiming to secure positions that would enable its maneuvers and spread its falsehoods—will ultimately lead only to defeat.
