Dili (East Timor), May 19, 2025 (SPS) – Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, a member of the National Secretariat, the Polisario Front’s representative to the United Nations, and coordinator with MINURSO, was received by H.E. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar is visiting East Timor as a special envoy of the President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, H.E. Brahim Ghali.

During the meeting at the Government Palace in the capital, Dili, the Sahrawi envoy conveyed the warmest greetings of President Brahim Ghali, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, on behalf of the Sahrawi people and government, to the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste and, through him, to the brotherly Timorese government and people.

The two sides discussed a range of issues of mutual interest. The Sahrawi envoy briefed the Timorese Prime Minister on the latest developments in the Sahrawi cause at the continental and international levels, with particular emphasis on the human rights situation in the occupied Sahrawi territories and the repression and intimidation carried out by the occupying Moroccan state against Sahrawi civilians.

For his part, Mr. Xanana Gusmão reiterated his country’s principled and well-known support for the legitimate struggle of the Sahrawi people for independence and the liberation of Sahrawi territory from Moroccan occupation. He emphasized the strong historical and special ties between the Sahrawi and Timorese peoples, forged through decades of shared struggle against colonialism and foreign occupation.

The meeting was also an opportunity for the Sahrawi delegation to express the deep gratitude of the Sahrawi people and the government of the Sahrawi Republic towards Timor-Leste—both its government and people—for their principled and steadfast support of the Sahrawi struggle for freedom and independence, as well as their strong advocacy for the Sahrawi cause in continental and international forums.

The meeting was attended on the Sahrawi side by Mr. Abba Malainin, Ambassador of the Sahrawi Republic to Timor-Leste, and on the Timorese side by the Prime Minister’s advisor.
