Madrid (Spain), April 17, 2025 (SPS) – The Polisario Front has strongly condemned the statements made by Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares in support of Morocco’s expansionist policy in Western Sahara.

In a statement issued by its representation in Spain, the Polisario Front expressed its "strong condemnation" of Albares’ remarks during his meeting with his Moroccan counterpart, describing his defense of Morocco’s position as a blatant violation of international law and the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination and independence.

The statement emphasized that Albares’ comments, which reflect explicit support for Moroccan interests, directly contradict the Spanish government’s proclaimed policy of defending human rights. It stressed that "any proposal that disregards the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence constitutes a clear violation of international covenants."

The statement further noted that the stance taken by the Spanish government, led by the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), lacks the support of the Spanish public and most political forces in the country, which have rejected this foreign policy approach. It highlighted that this position goes against the sentiments of Spanish citizens and nearly all political factions, except for the minister’s own party.

In the same context, the Polisario Front’s representative in Spain, Mr. Abdallah Al-Arabi, reaffirmed the Front’s commitment to ensuring that any decision regarding Western Sahara aligns with the international legal framework of the issue. He emphasized that the Polisario Front will continue to guarantee that any decision directly or indirectly related to Western Sahara must uphold the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination and independence.

Albares’ remarks have sparked widespread criticism on social media, with activists and organizations denouncing his stance as a betrayal of the Sahrawi people and a violation of international law.
