New York (United Nations), April 15, 2025 (SPS) – Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, member of the National Secretariat, the Polisario Front’s representative at the United Nations and coordinator with MINURSO, affirmed that the Security Council’s closed-door consultations held on Monday regarding the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) demonstrate the continued presence of the Sahrawi issue on the UN agenda.
This statement was made during an interview conducted by the Sahrawi diplomat on Monday with Algerian national television, where he highlighted the propaganda promoted by the Moroccan occupying state, attempting to mislead its domestic public into believing that the Sahrawi issue has been "closed" at the UN level—especially after the U.S. administration reiterated its support for Morocco’s expansionist policy, which contradicts the UN Charter.
The Sahrawi diplomat stated that the Security Council’s convening of consultations—including the participation of the United States—along with the positions of many Council members emphasizing the need for a peaceful, just, and lasting solution that guarantees the people of Western Sahara their right to self-determination, serves as a clear and strong response to the recent stances expressed by the French and American governments, as well as to the propaganda of the Moroccan occupying state.
In conclusion, the Polisario Front’s representative at the UN and coordinator with MINURSO stressed that the Western Sahara issue has not and will never be "closed" as long as the Sahrawi people are denied their inalienable, non-negotiable, and imprescriptible right to self-determination and independence.
