Algiers, 10 April 2025 (SPS) - The Council of the Nation (upper house of Parliament), under the presidency of Salah Goudjil, affirmed on Thursday that the solution to the Western Sahara question lies in a fair and transparent referendum, under the supervision and responsibility of the United Nations.

“The upper house renews its firm attachment to the conviction that the Western Sahara question can only achieve a lasting and just solution through the valiant Sahrawi people exercising their right to self-determination through a fair and transparent referendum, under the supervision and responsibility of the United Nations,” the upper house said in a statement.

According to the same source, “the confirmation by the American State Department of the United States of America’s position regarding the just Sahrawi cause represents a deviation from international legality, which should be upheld, especially by a permanent member of the UN Security Council.”

“This stance will only fuel the colonialist ambitions of the Moroccan regime by offering it hollow victories that can neither change historical truths nor alter the inevitable course of History, which rejects and despises colonialism, however long it may endure,” it was noted.

The upper house further said that this same position “will also undermine international efforts aimed at promoting UN solutions and allowing the Sahrawi people to exercise their legitimate right to self-determination and independence, in line with the agreed legal framework, namely the 1991 UN settlement plan.”

Based on the position of the Algerian State expressed in the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, published on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the upper house underscored the fact that the Sahrawi question is “legal, unique and indisputable in nature.”

“This is a decolonization case, as affirmed by all relevant international and regional resolutions,” the same source continued, noting that this question “is registered as such on the agenda of the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, as well as in its resolutions enshrining the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination.”
