Shaheed El Hafed (Refugee Camps), 3 April 2025 )SPS) – The Polisario Front reiterated on Thursday the Sahrawi people's unwavering and non-negotiable right to self-determination and independence.
The remarks were made by Sidi Mohamed Omar, the Polisario Front's representative to the United Nations and coordinator with the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), in comments to Sahrawi media ahead of the visit by the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, to the refugee camps and his meeting with the Sahrawi side.
Sidi Omar recalled the Sahrawi side's "long-standing and repeatedly reaffirmed position that the UN-OAU (now AU) Settlement Plan—which is based on organizing a self-determination referendum and was accepted by both parties to the conflict (the Polisario Front and the occupying state of Morocco)—remains the optimal and realistic solution agreed upon to complete the decolonization of Western Sahara."
The Sahrawi diplomat noted that de Mistura's visit follows the latest UN Security Council Resolution 2756, adopted on October 31 of last year, which requested the Secretary-General to provide periodic briefings, including within six months of MINURSO's mandate renewal.
In this context, de Mistura will brief Security Council members on April 14, with his report expected to cover his efforts since his last briefing in October.
It is worth recalling that the Permanent Bureau of the Polisario Front’s National Secretariat, in its latest meeting, reaffirmed the Sahrawi side's commitment to the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination and independence. It stressed that the 1991 UN-OAU Settlement Plan remains "the just, realistic, and agreed-upon solution" endorsed by both parties and unanimously approved by the UN General Assembly, the UN Security Council, and the Organization of African Unity (now the African Union).
