Geneva (Switzerland), March 22, 2025 (SPS) – Sahrawi human rights defender Hassana Moulay Dahy delivered an intervention highlighting the alarming situation in the occupied territories of Western Sahara. He emphasized that the absence of an independent mechanism to monitor human rights has led to the continuation of grave and systematic violations without accountability, amid international silence.

He pointed out that the Moroccan occupation continues to block the entry of independent observers into Western Sahara, including the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, despite repeated appeals from UN treaty bodies and special procedures.

He stressed that this blockade on international monitoring mechanisms not only undermines the credibility of the United Nations but also leaves the Sahrawi people without any protection from severe violations of their fundamental rights.

He added that these violations occur in the context of a tight media blackout, where independent journalists and international observers are prevented from accessing the occupied territories. This allows Morocco to impose its official narrative without any accountability or transparency.

In conclusion, he emphasized that the continued failure of the United Nations to establish an independent mechanism to monitor human rights in Western Sahara represents an unacceptable gap.

He called on the Human Rights Council to take responsibility and implement concrete steps to ensure independent monitoring in all non-self-governing territories, including Western Sahara.

He concluded by affirming that achieving justice for the Sahrawi people requires genuine international commitment.
