Geneva (Switzerland), 7 March 2025 (SPS) –  The representative of the International Institute for Nonviolent Action (NOVACT), L. Maibon, emphasized the need to break the silence on violations in Western Sahara and hold the perpetrators accountable.

During her speech at the conference presenting the annual report on human rights violations in the occupied territories of Western Sahara for 2024, organized by the International Institute for Nonviolent Action (NOVACT) and ACAPS in collaboration with the working group on the occupied territories, she explained that the new report reveals grave human rights violations. She stressed that the struggle for the rights of the Sahrawi people is not isolated from global anti-colonial struggles, pointing out the similarities between what is happening in Western Sahara and what other peoples, such as Palestine, are experiencing.

Maibon criticized the pressure exerted by Moroccan authorities at the international level, which includes restricting events where the Sahrawi issue is discussed, deporting international journalists and activists, and attempts to silence dissenting voices.

NOVACT has been working for nearly a decade to support Sahrawi human rights defenders, strengthen their capacity to document violations, and denounce the involvement of multinational companies in supporting the occupation.
