Shaheed El Hafed, February 7, 2025 (SPS) – The Union of Sahrawi Journalists and Writers (UPES) has strongly condemned the expulsion of journalist Francisco Carrión, from the newspaper El Independiente, by Moroccan occupying forces from the occupied city of Dakhla. They described this attack on the press as a new step in Morocco's escalation, confirming the persistence of the media, police, and military blockade imposed on the occupied parts of the Sahrawi Republic.
The Sahrawi journalists' union stated that Morocco only allows visits that serve colonial propaganda in occupied Western Sahara, while the occupied Sahrawi cities are closed to journalists, activists, and observers who address the Sahrawi issue impartially or in solidarity with the just struggle of the Sahrawi people.
The Spanish journalist traveled to the occupied city of Dakhla to conduct a journalistic investigation into the daily repression against the Sahrawi people. He is considered one of the journalists specialized in the Western Sahara issue and has written several articles and journalistic works on the subject and its developments.
In recent weeks, members of the Coordination of Friendship Associations with the Sahrawi People (CEAS) and journalist José Carmona have also been expelled from the occupied city of Dakhla. Morocco has expelled 307 people, including media professionals, lawyers, and human rights activists, for attempting to investigate or verify the human rights situation in the occupied territory of Western Sahara.
