Brussels (Belgium), January 28, 2025 (SPS) - A closed session was held today, Tuesday, at the Parliament's headquarters in Brussels with a delegation representing the Polisario Front as the legitimate and sole representative of the Sahrawi people. The session focused on the recent decisions of the European Court of Justice issued on October 4, 2024, which rejected appeals from the Commission and the Council of the European Union and reaffirmed the rulings of the General Court from September 2021. This meeting was called by the Working Group on the Maghreb within the International Trade Committee of the European Parliament.
The Polisario Front appreciates the historic decisions of the European Court of Justice, which confirmed the legal status of the territory as "separate and distinct from the Kingdom of Morocco" and the sovereignty of the Sahrawi people over their natural resources based on their inalienable right to self-determination and independence. They commend this step and hope it will mark the beginning of a joint path with the European Union to ensure respect for the Court's decisions.
In a statement to the Sahrawi News Agency (SPS), Mohamed Salem Ould Salek confirmed that "the Polisario Front is ready to sit at the negotiating table with the European Union to reach an agreement that respects the Court's decisions and guarantees the interests of the Sahrawi people, which have permanent sovereignty over the natural resources of Western Sahara." He expressed the Front's hope that this step would be the beginning of a serious path leading to an agreement with the European side, which would undoubtedly pave the way for the European Union to play a positive role in advancing a just and peaceful settlement in Western Sahara based on the application of international law.
In this context, the head of the Polisario Front delegation noted that "the Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, President of the Republic, Mr. Brahim Ghali, had sent a message to the rotating President of the European Union, the Prime Minister of Poland, confirming the Polisario Front's openness and readiness to negotiate with the European Union in line with the decisions of the European Court of Justice."
