Chahid El Hafed (Sahrawi Republic) 15 January 2025 (SPS)– The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) participated today in a high-level virtual meeting of African energy ministers, held to prepare for the G20 Energy Transition Working Group under South Africa’s presidency.
Hosted via a virtual platform and chaired by South Africa, the one-day meeting focused on aligning Africa's energy strategies with global priorities and Agenda 2063, the continent's long-term development framework. The Sahrawi Republic was represented by Sahrawi Minister of Transport and Energy, Mr. Salek Mohamed Mbarek.
The agenda included opening remarks and a comprehensive presentation by Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, outlining South Africa’s energy agenda for the G20. Dr. Ramokgopa emphasized the need for a unified African approach to energy transition, ensuring the continent’s voice is strongly represented during South Africa's G20 presidency.
Ministers from across the continent provided their input, highlighting key challenges and opportunities in achieving a sustainable energy future for Africa. Discussions underscored the importance of collaborative efforts to advance renewable energy, improve infrastructure, and ensure energy access for all, in line with both Agenda 2063 and global energy transition goals.
The meeting concluded with remarks from H.E. Dr. Amani Abou Zeid, African Union Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, who summarized key decisions and outlined the next steps for the working group.
Minister Salek Mohamed Mbarek reiterated the Sahrawi Republic’s commitment to the collective energy ambitions of the continent and emphasized the importance of solidarity among African nations in addressing global energy challenges.
This meeting marked an important step toward ensuring Africa’s energy priorities are integrated into the global agenda, as South Africa leads the G20 Energy Transition Working Group in 2025. (SPS)
