Brussels, 9 December 2024 (SPS) - The topic of the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination was the focus of the first lecture at the "International Conference of Lawyers for Western Sahara," held at the European Parliament starting today, Monday.
The lecture, moderated by Juan Carlos Gomez, a member of the International Lawyers' Union for Western Sahara, featured contributions from international law and European law specialist Ayman Al-Nimr and Margalida Capella Ruych, a professor of public international law at the University of the Balearic Islands in Spain.
During the lecture, emphasis was placed on the subject of self-determination and the ways to implement international law in Western Sahara, as well as the situation of human rights in the occupied territories and the issue of natural resources, which has become a central theme in light of the decisions made by the European Court of Justice on October 4.
Participants in this two-day conference also addressed the responsibilities of the United Nations, the African Union, and the European Union, emphasizing the latter's role in contributing effectively and practically to being part of the solution rather than obstructing the settlement process.
Furthermore, the speakers highlighted Spain's responsibility as the administering power in completing the decolonization process, while also holding France accountable for obstructing efforts aimed at resolving the conflict in Western Sahara and enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination.
