Harare (Zimbabwe) 01 October 2024 (SPS)— Zimbabwean President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, reaffirmed his country's unwavering support for the Sahrawi Republic and its people's right to self-determination, in a letter he addressed to Sahrawi President, Brahim Ghali, of which SPS received a copy.
The letter, dated 17th September 2024, came in response to President Ghali's message of congratulations following Mnangagwa’s recent assumption of the position of Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Mnangagwa expressed gratitude on the warm words and emphasized his intention to maintain close collaboration with President Brahim Ghali, stressing his commitment to strengthening the historical ties between Zimbabwe and the Sahrawi Republic.
"I would like to re-affirm my commitment to continue working closely with you, Your Excellency, to further strengthen and broaden the strong bonds of friendship and solidarity that have characterised the historical relations between Zimbabwe and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic," Mnangagwa wrote.
In his message, Mnangagwa highlighted Zimbabwe's "unconditional support" for the Sahrawi people's struggle for self-determination, a cause long championed by the African Union and other international organizations.
The President also conveyed his personal well-wishes to Ghali, expressing hope for peace and freedom for the people of the Sahrawi Republic, which continues to struggle for freedom and liberation of parts of its territory from the Moroccan illegal occupation.
The letter underscores Zimbabwe’s long-standing solidarity with the Sahrawi cause, particularly within regional and international platforms. As Chair of SADC, Mnangagwa’s leadership could further bolster the bloc's diplomatic backing for the Sahrawi people's quest for self-rule. (SPS)
