Banjul (The Gambia), May 11, 2025 (SPS) – The People's Democratic Republic of Algeria reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Sahrawi refugees Yesterday during the Oral statement of its representative, Mr. Cherif Dehimi, at the 83rd Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, currently taking place in Banjul, The Gambia.
The Algerian diplomat’s remarks in reaction to the report presented by Ms. Salma Sassi, the Special Rapporteur on Refugees, Asylum Seekers, Internally Displaced Persons, and Migrants in Africa during a Session on the state of affairs in Africa on her portfolio.
Mr. Dehimi emphasized that "Algeria continues to provide comprehensive support to Sahrawi refugees in camps near Tindouf," noting that this is done "in close cooperation with relevant UN agencies, international humanitarian organizations, and donors," and reflects Algeria’s firm adherence to humanitarian principles and international solidarity.
The Algerian representative underlined that regardless of the current situation of the Sahrawi refugees, "a just and lasting solution to their plight lies in enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination," describing it as the only viable path to ending their suffering and ensuring their dignity and fundamental rights, in accordance with relevant UN and African Union resolutions.
In the same context, Mr. Dehimi stressed the need for the ACHPR to fulfill its responsibilities to wards these refugees. Algeria, he noted, calls on the Commission to "monitor and document the human rights violations committed against the Sahrawi people by the Moroccan occupation," adding that international silence in the face of these violations only worsens the suffering of the Sahrawi people.
This position reaffirms Algeria’s principled and honorable support for the Sahrawi people's struggle for freedom and independence, in full alignment with its consistent stance on decolonization across the African continent. (SPS)
