Vitoria (Spain), May 11, 2025 (SPS) - Aminatu Haidar, president of the Sahrawi Body Against Moroccan Occupation (ISACOM), highlighted the pioneering role of Sahrawi women in confronting Moroccan occupation and defending the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination during an event in Vitoria.
This took place during her participation in an international workshop organized by the Basque government on May 6 and 7, focusing on African experiences in protecting human rights defenders, attended by prominent international human rights figures, including the former special rapporteur of the African Union for human rights defenders and the vice president of the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
According to a post by ISACOM on its official social media page, Haidar presented a speech discussing the Sahrawi human rights experience, emphasizing the leadership of Sahrawi women in promoting a culture of human rights and defending their people's right to self-determination against ongoing occupation and violations.
Haidar previously stated that the international campaign calling for the release of Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan jails comes at a time when the Sahrawi territories are experiencing a dangerous escalation from the occupying Moroccan state on all levels and a crackdown on public freedoms, alongside its continued closure of the occupied territories of Western Sahara to international observers and their expulsion.
She pointed out that "this situation reflects a dire reality that the Moroccan occupying state seeks to conceal and fears being exposed."
The Sahrawi activist condemned the continued crimes committed by Moroccan occupation authorities against Sahrawis on all fronts, the latest being the demolition of Sahrawi homes amid a terrible international silence.
In light of this serious situation, Haidar added, "The international community is required to intervene seriously, as the Sahrawi cause is a decolonization issue."
