Bir Lehlou (Sahrawi Republic), May 7, 2025 (SPS) – The Sahrawi National Council (Parliament) has strongly denounced the nomination of a Moroccan diplomat for the Nelson Mandela Prize, describing it as a "historic disgrace and a betrayal of the values of justice, dignity, and freedom embodied by Nelson Mandela," according to a statement issued by the Council today.
The Council said the nominee, Amina Bouayach, is not a genuine human rights defender but rather a facade for the oppressive Makhzen regime. It emphasized that instead of advocating for justice, she has justified and whitewashed systematic human rights violations, particularly in Western Sahara against Sahrawis, as well as against Rifians, journalists, and activists.
With full responsibility, the Sahrawi National Council called on the nomination committee members not to tarnish Nelson Mandela’s legacy by awarding this honor to a representative of a repressive and colonial system like the Makhzen. It stressed that doing so would not only be a grave mistake but also a blatant betrayal of the noble principles of justice, freedom, and dignity for which Mandela fought.
