Photography exhibition on struggle and culture of Sahrawi people in Spain

Madrid, 25 March 2025 (SPS) -  The Spanish city of San Sebastián is hosting Since yesterday, Monday, and until April 5th, a photography exhibition highlighting the struggle and culture of the Sahrawi people.

The event, titled "Sahara in Memory," is organized by the Spanish Independent Left Party in collaboration with Moving World organization. Held at the city’s public library, the exhibition features photographs by Miguel Serrano, documenting the daily lives of Sahrawi refugees who were forcibly displaced half a century ago.

The opening ceremony was attended by Juan Torres, spokesperson for the Independent Left Party, photographer Miguel Serrano, actor and longtime supporter of the Sahrawi cause Pepe Viyuela, as well as Khadijetou El Mokhtar, representative of the Polisario Front in the Madrid region. Also present were members of the City Council, the Association of Friends of the Sahrawi People in San Sebastián, local press, artists, and solidarity activists.

During the opening, Serrano expressed his gratitude to the Sahrawi people for their warm welcome during his visit to the refugee camps, where he captured these images reflecting the resilience of a steadfast people.

For his part, actor Pepe Viyuela called on Spanish political parties and civil society to "take moral responsibility" toward the Sahrawi people.

Meanwhile, the Independent Left Party’s spokesperson reaffirmed his party’s solidarity with the Sahrawi struggle, announcing plans for a series of awareness-raising events on the Sahrawi issue to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).
