Sahrawi civilian prisoner initiates hunger strike

Ait Melloul (Morocco), February 14, 2025 (SPS) - Sahrawi civilian prisoner Ahmetou Lakouri has begun a hunger strike at Ait Melloul prison in protest against mistreatment, according to a Sahrawi human rights source.

The same source, citing the mother of prisoner Ahmetou Lakouri, reported that her son resorted to an open-ended hunger strike, which has reached its fourth day, after exhausting all forms of communication with the administration through several requests and letters concerning the improvement of detention conditions and the enjoyment of all basic and legitimate rights.

According to the source, prisoner Ahmetou Lakouri demands humane and dignified treatment, the provision of a cell that meets essential health standards, and the right to communicate by phone with his family without hindrance or confiscation.

Furthermore, the mother of Sahrawi civilian prisoner Ahmetou Lakouri has called on all concerned international organizations concerned with human rights to support her son until all his just and legitimate demands are met, notably the provision of necessary protection inside the prison from all forms of targeting and racial discrimination.
