Occupied El Aaiún, January 28, 2025 (SPS) – Sources close to the Sahrawi political prisoner Hametu Lakweiri, who is held in the local prison of Ait Melloul 2, on the outskirts of Agadir (Morocco), have informed the Association for the Protection of Sahrawi Prisoners in Moroccan Prisons that he is suffering from premeditated medical neglect that has led to a worsening of his health condition.
On Thursday, January 23, 2025, the mother of the Sahrawi political prisoner Hametu Lakweiri contacted the Association for the Protection of Sahrawi Prisoners to report that the Moroccan prison administration had not responded to all of the Sahrawi activist's requests regarding his transfer to a prison closer to where his family resides.
Despite the deterioration in the health of the Sahrawi political prisoner, particularly concerning his kidneys and eyes illnesses that have affected his vision, as well as headaches and fever, the prison administration proceeded to search the activist's cell in a provocative and humiliating manner, subjecting him to mistreatment and destroying his belongings, including his glasses.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time the Sahrawi political prisoner Hametu Lakweiri has been denied medical treatment, as the local prison administration of Ait Melloul 2 has previously violated his fundamental rights, which are internationally guaranteed, the last time being in December 2024.
