Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) 14 January 2025 (SPS)- The 49th Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) of the African Union (AU) commenced today, Tuesday, in the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in meetings that are expected to continue until the end of January.
These meetings serve as a crucial step in preparing for the 46th Session of the AU Executive Council, which will take place in mid-February followed by the 38th AU Summit of Heads of State and Government.
During its sessions, the PRC will focus on reviewing more than fifty reports and documents covering a wide range of issues, including the activities of its sub-committees, reports of the Specialized Technical Committees, and reports of various AU organs and institutions.
The Islamic Republic of Mauritania presided over the PRC's session, in its capacity as the current Chair of the African Union. Delegates approved the agenda for the day before beginning discussions on its items.
The upcoming summit is expected to elect a new leadership for the African Union. Elections will be held to select a new Chairperson of the AU Commission from East Africa, a Deputy Chairperson from North Africa, while the remaining three regions will compete for six commissioner positions.
The PRC agenda includes discussions on key issues such as refugees, human rights, health, education, governance, trade, development, and other critical matters of significance to the continent.
It is worth noting that the Sahrawi Republic participated in the PRC opening session, represented by its Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Mr. Lamine Baali. (SPS)
