London (UK), October 31, 2024 (SPS) - The British government has reiterated its position on the issue of Western Sahara.

In a question posed by Labour MP Mr. Ben Lake to the Minister of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, he inquired about the steps the British government is taking at the United Nations to help ensure that the people of Western Sahara can exercise their right to self-determination in accordance with the United Nations Charter.

In response , Mr. Hamish Falconer, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office), said that the United Kingdom supports the efforts led by the United Nations to reach a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution based on resolution, which guarantees the right to self-determination for the people of Western Sahara.

He added that the United Kingdom continues to support the United Nations-led efforts and the work of Stefan de Mistura in his capacity as the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Western Sahara, whom he met on September 18.

Officials regularly discuss the issue of Western Sahara with international partners, and we continue to encourage constructive engagement in the political process, he added.
