Madrid, 23 April 2024 (SPS) - The headquarters of the Regional Parliament of Cantabria, in northern Spain, has been organizing a since Monday a photo exhibition to raise awareness about the struggle of Sahrawi women and document the Sahrawi people's fight against Moroccan occupation. This exhibition is part of an awareness program about the Western Sahara issue organized by several Spanish provinces.
The exhibition, titled "Journey of the Women of the Desert," was inaugurated by María José González, the President of the Regional Parliament of Cantabria. It includes dozens of photographs taken by photographer Ana Valiño in the Sahrawi refugee camps, depicting the lives of Sahrawi women since they left their homes in the occupied Western Sahara due to the Moroccan invasion. The photographs showcase different stages of the Sahrawi struggle and their resistance to the difficult conditions of exile.
The photos also reflect the promising prospects resulting from the resilience and resistance of Sahrawi women against expansion and aggression. Ana Valiño, the journalist and photographer behind the exhibition, highlighted the hospitality that characterizes Sahrawi women, stating that the exhibition explores "the depth of the private life of Sahrawi women, their wounds, and what occupation has deprived them of enjoying."
This photo exhibition is the second of its kind about the Western Sahara issue organized by the Regional Parliament of Cantabria in April, following a similar exhibition by photographer José Luis de Pablo. The exhibition will remain at the headquarters of the Regional Parliament until May 3rd, as part of a comprehensive awareness campaign to draw public attention at the regional level in Spain to the process of decolonization and Spain's historical responsibility regarding the conflict in Western Sahara.
