El Aaiun Wilaya, 26 October 2026 (SPS) – Large numbers of Sahrawi citizens took today, Monday, to the streets in El Aaiun Wilaya, demanding a just UN-sponsored solution that guarantees their legitimate right to freedom, self-determination and independence.
Demonstrators expressed their categorical rejection of attempts to bypass international legitimacy, reaffirming their commitment to resolutions upholding the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination and full independence.
Carrying national flags and chanting slogans, participants rejected any settlement inconsistent with UN resolutions and the principle of decolonization. They stressed that any solution that fails to guarantee self-determination is bound to fail.
Speaking to the Sahrawi Press Service (SPS), several participants described the demonstrations as a response to international efforts to revive proposals previously rejected by the Sahrawi people. The broad participation of different segments of Sahrawi society reflected national unity and the people's continued commitment to international legitimacy and independence.
The demonstrations followed the circulation of a US zero draft on Western Sahara, which the United States, as penholder, issued in a move denounced by Sahrawis as undermining international legitimacy and the internationally recognised status of Western Sahara as a decolonization issue.
Following the draft's circulation, the Polisario Front's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and coordinator with MINURSO, Dr Sidi Mohamed Omar, warned that the Front would withdraw from the entire peace process if the draft were adopted. He urged UN Security Council members to assume their full responsibility for upholding international legitimacy and relevant UN resolutions.
