Bordeaux (France), 26 October 2026 (SPS) – The Gironde Federation of the French Communist Party has reaffirmed its support for the Polisario Front and the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination and independence, calling for a UN-supervised referendum and the release of Sahrawi political prisoners.

In a statement on Western Sahara, the federation said the party's support for the Polisario Front, which dates back to the 1970s, reflects its longstanding anti-colonial commitment and defence of peoples' right to self-determination.

The party recalled that Western Sahara remains on the United Nations list of Non-Self-Governing Territories and stressed that its final status must be determined through the exercise of the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination. It reaffirmed that a UN-supervised referendum remains essential to achieving a solution consistent with international law.

Commenting on UN Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), adopted on 31 October 2025, the party called for continued efforts to reach a just and lasting political solution, underscoring the Polisario Front's role in the political process.

The federation also expressed reservations about France's position on Western Sahara, particularly its growing rapprochement with Morocco and support for Rabat's stance, warning that this approach could undermine the credibility of French diplomacy and raise questions regarding international law and European jurisprudence.

It cited the Court of Justice of the European Union's October 2024 rulings, which reaffirmed, among other points, the need to respect the Sahrawi people's consent to agreements concluded between the EU and Morocco.

The federation further recalled that the French Communist Party's 40th Congress, held in Lille in July 2026, renewed the party's solidarity with the Polisario Front and its opposition to the exploitation of Western Sahara's natural resources.

It also expressed solidarity with Sahrawi political prisoners, calling for their release and condemning violations of their rights.

The Gironde Federation reiterated its commitment to the Sahrawi people's struggle for independence and self-determination, stressing that this inalienable and enduring right must be realised through a UN-supervised referendum.
