Occupied El Aaiun, August 10, 2026 (SPS) – The Sahrawi Prisoners’ Association in Moroccan Prisons received a statement from the family of Sahrawi civilian prisoner Abdullah Lakhfaouni, a member of the Gdeim Izik group, stating that he has begun a 48-hour warning hunger strike as of Monday.
According to the family, the hunger strike is an initial step aimed at drawing public attention to the serious and systematic violations being committed against civilian prisoner Abdullah Lakhfaouni, which have recently intensified, particularly with regard to his health.
According to information provided by civilian prisoner Abdullah Lakhfaouni to his family, the hunger strike also comes in the context of his legitimate demand for the implementation of the decision issued in May 2023 by the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. The decision explicitly called on the Moroccan occupying authorities to immediately release the members of the Gdeim Izik prisoner group, affirming the unlawfulness of their detention.
