New York (UN) 19 March 2026 (SPS) – In a significant blow to political maneuvers targeting the Sahrawi cause, the United Nations has reaffirmed the legal and political status of the Polisario Front as a "key party" in the UN settlement process for the Western Sahara conflict.
This decisive UN stance came in a statement yesterday, Wednesday, by Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General. Responding to a question from Al-Quds Al-Arabi correspondent Abdelhamid Seyam regarding a limited attempt within the U.S. Congress, led by members known for their close ties to the Moroccan lobby, aimed at labeling the Front as "terrorist" through baseless allegations.
In his response, Farhan Haq stated: " As you know, the UN has regarded the Frente POLISARIO as one of the key parties involved in the Western Sahara conflict, and we continue to deal with them as we do with the governments of Morocco, Algeria and Mauritania and other involved regional parties."
Three hardline Republican senators, Ted Cruz, Tom Cotton, and Rick Scott, had introduced a bill attempting to link the Polisario Front to international entities, alleging "terrorist ties" in an effort to confuse the political landscape.
However, observers characterized this move as "political posturing" that reflects the inability of forces supporting the Moroccan illegal occupation to challenge the justice of the Sahrawi demand in international legal forums. This has led them to resort to "demonization" and unsubstantiated accusations that lack any credible intelligence or field reports.
This UN support reinforces the position of the Polisario Front as an internationally recognized national liberation movement committed to international Law and UN Charter. It comes at a time when the Moroccan occupation continues its desperate attempts to undermine the peace process by mobilizing its proxies and paid lobbies within international decision-making bodies.
Ultimately, the UN position proves that the status of the Polisario as the representative of the Sahrawi people is a fixed international legal fact, unaffected by Special-interest bills aimed at serving expansionist and colonialist agendas in the region, in flagrant violation of international law and of Sahrawi people’s right to freedom and self-determination.
