Pontassieve (Italy), February 21, 2026 (SPS) – The Italian city of Pontassieve commemorated the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Republic through a program of cultural and political initiatives dedicated to the history and present of the Sahrawi people.

The Municipality of Pontassieve, in coordination with Italian solidarity associations, organized a photographic exhibition highlighting 50 years of exile, resistance, and the struggle of the Sahrawi people for their inalienable right to self-determination.

The exhibition features historical photographs and testimonies reflecting the resilience and dignity of a cause that continues to rally support in Europe and around the world.

As part of the events, an institutional meeting was also held, bringing together representatives of the Polisario Front, researchers, and solidarity activists.

During the meeting, participants reviewed half a century of Sahrawi resistance, emphasizing what they described as injustices under international law and the need to reach a just and lasting solution that guarantees the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.

Speakers stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between Italian local institutions and solidarity organizations, as well as keeping awareness alive within European civil society regarding the situation in Western Sahara.

The events in Pontassieve will conclude on February 28 with the inauguration of a mural dedicated to the rights of peoples, to be erected as a lasting symbol of solidarity and commitment to the Sahrawi cause in Italy, reaffirming the bonds of friendship between the Italian and Sahrawi peoples.
