Luanda (Angola), 24 November 2025 (SPS) – The President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, took part in the proceedings of the Seventh African Union–European Union Summit, alongside participating heads of state and delegations.
The opening session was jointly chaired by Angolan President João Lourenço and President of the European Council António Costa. The European Union was represented by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the African Union by Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the AU Commission.
The Seventh AU–EU Summit discusses an evaluation of relations between the two sides, as well as issues of peace and security, governance.
In his address, the President of the Republic stressed the centrality of the Western Sahara issue in any genuine approach to peace and security on the African continent, affirming that it "remains the last decolonization issue of its kind in Africa, still unresolved."
Mr. Brahim Ghali reminded African and European leaders that the Sahrawi people are still "struggling with patience and steadfastness, waiting for the long-overdue opportunity to exercise their legitimate, inalienable, and non-expiring right to self-determination and independence, just like the rest of the peoples of Africa and the world."
He emphasized that this summit is an opportunity to demonstrate commitment to the joint vision for 2030, in alignment with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the European Union’s strategic priorities. He called for translating rhetoric into practical plans to confront developmental challenges.
Today's session featured statements from participating delegations, and the summit will conclude tomorrow with a final communiqué outlining a joint strategy between the African Union and the European Union.
The President of the Republic arrived Sunday in the Angolan capital, Luanda, heading a delegation that includes Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, Adviser for Arab World Affairs Nana Labat Rachid, Ambassador to Angola and Namibia Hamdi El-Khalil Mayara, Presidential Adviser Abdati Breika, and the ambassador in charge of presidential protocol, Salha El-Abd.
