Botswana President reaffirms his country’s support for Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence

Gaborone (Botswana), 12 November 2025 (SPS) – The President of the Republic of Botswana, Dr. Duma Gideon Boko, reiterated his country’s firm and principled stance in support of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, during a farewell audience he granted to the outgoing Sahrawi Ambassador to Botswana.

During the meeting, held at the Presidential Palace in Gaborone, President Boko praised the fraternal relations that unite Botswana and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.

The Botswana Head of State emphasized that his country’s position on the question of Western Sahara is based on the principles of justice and the right of peoples to freedom and independence, affirming that Botswana will continue to support the Sahrawi people’s struggle to achieve their freedom and self-determination, in line with the resolutions of the African Union and the United Nations.

For his part, the Sahrawi Ambassador expressed his country’s appreciation for Botswana’s principled position and conveyed to President Boko the greetings of his Sahrawi counterpart, President Brahim Ghali, along with best wishes for continued progress and prosperity for the people of Botswana.

President Boko entrusted the outgoing Sahrawi Ambassador with a message of support and solidarity to the Government and people of the Sahrawi Republic.

The farewell visit was also attended by the First Counsellor at the Sahrawi Embassy, Mr. Mohamed Embirik.
