New York (United States), October 11, 2025 (SPS) – The member of the National Secretariat, Representative of the Polisario Front to the United Nations, and Coordinator with MINURSO, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, affirmed that the Sahrawi people will never accept the Moroccan colonial status quo and will continue their legitimate resistance and struggle to achieve their national aspirations and to defend their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
In his speech on Thursday at the international conference held in New York under the title “Liberation Movements: The Case of Western Sahara”, the Sahrawi diplomat recalled that while this year marks 50 years of brutal Moroccan occupation, repression, and grave human rights violations, it also represents half a century of struggle, resistance, and the consolidation of the foundations of the Sahrawi State — above all, the steadfast determination of the Sahrawi people to defend their freedom and independence, for which they have sacrificed so much.
In this context, he emphasized that ending 50 years of Moroccan military occupation, repression, and deprivation of basic human rights in Western Sahara is a critical test of the credibility of the United Nations and the international community, and of their commitment to a rules-based international order.
He also reminded that since its establishment in 1973 as a national liberation movement, the very raison d’être of the Polisario Front has been to represent the Sahrawi people, defend their national aspirations, and lead their struggle to exist as a free, independent, and sovereign people in their homeland — the Sahrawi Republic. He stressed that the mission of the Polisario Front will not end until the Sahrawi people freely exercise their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
The Sahrawi diplomat affirmed that resolving the decolonization issue of Western Sahara in accordance with UN resolutions and relevant principles of international law is indeed possible, provided there is genuine political will on the part of the Moroccan occupying power to abandon its policies of fait accompli and to seriously seek a just, peaceful, and lasting solution that ensures peace, security, and stability throughout the region.
In this regard, he also stressed that the solution must necessarily pass through enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their inalienable, non-negotiable, and non-expiring right to self-determination and independence — freely, democratically, and transparently, without any form of external interference, and in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions and internationally recognized principles and norms.
In conclusion, the Polisario Front Representative to the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO reaffirmed the Sahrawi side’s commitment to the option of a just and lasting peace, while emphasizing that the Sahrawi people will never accept the Moroccan colonial status quo and will continue their legitimate resistance and struggle to achieve their national aspirations and to defend their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
