New York (United Nations), 3 October 2025 (SPS) - The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has deplored the violence that occurred during protests in Morocco, which left three people dead and hundreds injured.
The Secretary-General "deplores the violence that occurred during protests in Morocco," which resulted in three deaths and hundreds of injuries, his spokesperson, Farhan Haq, stated during a press conference on Thursday.
To this end, Mr. Guterres called for a "swift and impartial investigation to ensure accountability."
Three people were killed and hundreds more injured following the violent intervention of the Makhzen's security forces against peaceful demonstrators, as protests demanding social justice and the fight against corruption multiplied across the country.
Protesters who took part in the demonstrations were arrested, while authorities announced that some could face prison sentences of up to 20 years, or even life imprisonment. This has drawn sharp criticism from local and international human rights organizations, which view these sanctions as a clear political crime.
This escalation comes as citizens are calling for urgent economic and social reforms in the face of rising poverty, unemployment, and the deterioration of basic services.
These protests followed calls from a youth movement, which had emphasized in a statement the peaceful nature of its actions.
