Quito (Ecuador), August 12, 2025 (SPS) – Numerous political forces and social organizations from Latin America and the Caribbean endorsed a resolution supporting the struggle of the Sahrawi people and their just cause during the 19th International Symposium "Challenges of Revolution in Latin America," held days earlier at the Central University of Ecuador under the theme "Shifts in International Geopolitics."
The symposium was attended by delegations from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Germany.
In their statement, the political forces called on the Moroccan regime to end its occupation of Western Sahara and respect the Sahrawi people’s legitimate rights to self-determination and independence through a free and fair referendum under UN supervision.
They also condemned the ongoing plundering of Sahrawi natural resources, which blatantly violates international law and seeks to prolong Morocco’s expansionist colonial project at the expense of the Sahrawi people’s inalienable rights.
The participants strongly denounced the grave human rights violations in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, including the deteriorating conditions of dozens of Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan occupation jails.
The political parties further demanded the resumption of bilateral relations between Ecuador and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, based on the principle of legal equality among states and respect for peoples’ right to self-determination.
During this academic and political event, Pablo de la Vega, President of the Ecuadorian Friendship Association with the Sahrawi People, presented a research paper titled "Palestine and Western Sahara: Genocide and Resistance," which garnered significant attention from attendees.
