New York (UN), 15 October 2026 (SPS) – Zimbabwe has reaffirmed its firm support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, calling for a free and fair referendum in Western Sahara in accordance with the UN settlement plan and relevant resolutions.
Addressing the UN General Assembly’s Fourth Committee on Monday, Zimbabwe stressed that the prolonged delay in holding the referendum had deprived the Sahrawi people of their right to determine their own future.
Zimbabwe called on the international community to uphold Western Sahara’s status as a Non-Self-Governing Territory and urged all parties to enable the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to implement its mandate without obstruction.
It further stressed that any political initiative must ensure the full and effective participation of the Sahrawi people and respect their legitimate aspirations, warning that any process excluding them would undermine prospects for a just and lasting solution.
Zimbabwe urged renewed political engagement and the implementation of relevant UN resolutions, reiterating its solidarity with the Sahrawi people in their legitimate struggle for self-determination.
