Chahid El Hafed (Sahrawi Refugee Camps), 23 July 2026 (SPS)– The Sahrawi Working Group on Natural Resources and Related Legal Issues will organize an international conference next Saturday at the Presidency of the Republic Headquarters in Chahid El Hafed under the theme "Permanent Sovereignty over Natural Resources and the Legal Battle." The event will bring together international legal experts and representatives of solidarity organizations to discuss legal avenues for safeguarding the Sahrawi people's permanent sovereignty over their natural resources.
According to the organizers, the conference represents an important opportunity to review the latest legal and judicial developments concerning the issue of natural resources in Western Sahara and to exchange expertise and perspectives on mechanisms to strengthen the protection of the Sahrawi people's inalienable rights over their natural resources, in accordance with international law and the relevant decisions of international and regional courts and institutions.
Participants will examine several key issues, including strengthening strategic litigation through the development of mechanisms to monitor and document the exploitation and plunder of Western Sahara's natural resources, exploring legal and diplomatic advocacy at both the international and African levels, and assessing the responsibility of States and foreign companies involved in the exploitation of natural resources in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.
Discussions will also address the legal consequences of such activities under international humanitarian law and international human rights law.
The conference sessions will be led by members of the Working Group, together with a distinguished panel of Sahrawi and international legal experts. (SPS)
