Lisbon, Portugal, 17 July 2026 (SPS) – The Assembly of the Republic of Portugal, meeting in plenary session, has expressed its solidarity with Naâma Asfari, the other Sahrawi political prisoners of the Gdeim Izik Group and their families.

In its declaration, the Assembly recalled that Western Sahara remains, according to the United Nations, a Non-Self-Governing Territory pending decolonization, whose people hold the inalienable right to self-determination, which has yet to be exercised.

The Assembly urges the Kingdom of Morocco to immediately comply with Opinion No. 23/2023 of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and the decision of 15 November 2016 of the Committee against Torture, and to proceed with the release of Naâma Asfari.

It also demands that he be immediately guaranteed independent medical assistance and that his family be granted access to him.
