Havana (Cuba), June 9, 2026 (SPS) – The Sahrawi Embassy in Cuba commemorated the 50th anniversary of the martyrdom of El Ouali Mustapha Sayed, highlighting his pioneering and leading role in the Sahrawi national liberation struggle.

The event was hosted by the El Ouali Mustapha Sayed School and was attended by the Director of the House of Africa, a representative of the Cuban Institute for Friendship with Peoples, as well as Cuban political and media figures, including a granddaughter of Castro. Also present were members of the Sahrawi Embassy staff, led by Ambassador Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud, along with representatives of Sahrawi students in Cuba.

The occasion provided an opportunity to highlight the visionary leadership of El Ouali from an early age, as the founder of the Polisario Front and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.

The Sahrawi Ambassador to Cuba pointed out that El Ouali was a field commander, an educator with a brilliant mind, an enlightened leader, and a model and reference for the Polisario Front.

The commemoration also featured a series of cultural activities dedicated to the life and legacy of El Ouali. These included a song highlighting his leadership role, a chronological presentation of his life produced and presented by the school, and an exhibition organized by the embassy’s cultural attaché. The exhibition showcased books on the history and struggle of the Sahrawi people, photographs, and traditional cultural artifacts.
