Ljubljana (Slovenia), May 31, 2026 (SPS) – The renowned Slovenian news and current affairs program UPULS has dedicated a significant portion of its episode broadcast on May 30, to the Sahrawi issue through a special interview with Sahrawi human rights defender and President of the Sahrawi Body Against the Moroccan Occupation (ISACOM), Aminatou Haidar.

During the interview, Aminatou Haidar provided Slovenian viewers with a comprehensive overview of the situation of the Sahrawi people, both in the occupied territories of Western Sahara and in the Sahrawi refugee camps. She highlighted the human rights violations suffered by Sahrawis and their deprivation of their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.

The President of the Sahrawi Body Against the Moroccan Occupation also called for greater support and solidarity with the Sahrawi people, enabling them to exercise their legitimate right to self-determination and independence in accordance with United Nations resolutions and international legitimacy.

The interview was conducted as part of Aminatou Haidar’s visit to Slovenia from May 18 to 20, during which she participated in several political, human rights, and media activities aimed at raising awareness of the Sahrawi cause.

During the interview, Haidar pointed to the responsibility of the European Union in prolonging the conflict due to the economic and political support that some European countries provide to Morocco.

She stressed that the European Union and European states are directly or indirectly responsible for the continuation of the situation in Western Sahara through trade and economic agreements with Morocco that include the territory’s resources.

According to Haidar, these agreements contribute to the plundering of the natural resources of Western Sahara, while thousands of Sahrawis continue to live in refugee camps under difficult humanitarian conditions and depend on international aid.

The Sahrawi activist also addressed the social and economic discrimination faced by Sahrawis in the occupied territories, noting the difficulties they encounter in accessing employment, housing, and education, in contrast to the privileges enjoyed by settlers arriving from Morocco.

Haidar further spoke about her personal experience with persecution, arrest, and surveillance, stating that she had previously been subjected to detention, torture, and restrictions on her freedom of movement. She also affirmed that she continues to be subjected to digital surveillance, including spyware.

She pointed out that human rights work inside the territory is carried out under extremely difficult and clandestine conditions due to restrictions on freedom of association and assembly, as well as severe limitations imposed on Sahrawi human rights organizations.
