Managua (Nicaragua), May 28, 2026 (SPS) – Algeria reaffirmed in Managua, Nicaragua, the principles necessary to ensure a just and lasting settlement to the question of Western Sahara, reiterating its consistent position based on international legitimacy regarding the issue.

During the annual regional seminar of the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization (Committee of 24), held from May 25 to 27, the Algerian delegation, led by Algeria’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Toufik Koudri, rejected what it described as unfounded allegations and misleading interpretations promoted by Morocco, particularly in light of recent developments concerning the Sahrawi issue. The delegation reaffirmed Algeria’s firm and consistent stance grounded in international legitimacy.

In this regard, the head of the Algerian delegation recalled that Western Sahara remains the last territory in Africa among the 17 territories still listed on the agenda of the UN Committee on Decolonization. He stressed that all relevant resolutions adopted by the United Nations General Assembly and the United Nations Security Council affirm the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.

Mr. Koudri also referred to Algeria’s position regarding the resumption, earlier this year, of direct negotiations between the two parties to the conflict — the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front — under the auspices of the United Nations and the United States. In this context, he pointed out that Algeria welcomed the resumption of direct negotiations between the two parties, to which Algeria and Mauritania had been invited as neighboring observer countries.

Mr. Koudri reiterated Algeria’s determination to support all sincere efforts aimed at reaching a peaceful, just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution that guarantees the Sahrawi people the exercise of their inalienable right to self-determination, in accordance with the UN Charter and relevant resolutions of the General Assembly and Security Council.

He emphasized that the present and future of Western Sahara belong to the Sahrawi people, who must be the sole beneficiaries of any final and mutually acceptable solution agreed upon by both parties, the Polisario Front and Morocco, in a manner that guarantees the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
