Shaheed El Hafed, May 4, 2026 (SPS) – The President of the National Council, member of the National Secretariat, Mr. Bashir Mustapha Sayed, received a high-level Italian delegation at the headquarters of the National Council.
The delegation included the Chair of the Human Rights Committee in the Italian Chamber of Deputies, the committee’s Vice-Chair, an advisor from the Foreign Affairs Committee, and the Italian Consul in Algeria, in the presence of the Polisario Front’s representative in Italy.
During the meeting, the President of the National Council provided the Italian delegation with an overview of the role of the Sahrawi legislative institution in the political life of the Sahrawi Republic. He highlighted the role of parliamentary diplomacy and its importance in strengthening parliamentary relations and promoting awareness of the Sahrawi cause in various parliamentary forums, notably through activating Sahrawi parliamentary friendship groups with several national and regional parliaments worldwide.
He emphasized the important role Italy can play in supporting peoples’ right to self-determination, calling for a firm stance against policies of repression and domination that seek to impose a law of the jungle approach.
For their part, members of the Italian delegation expressed their interest in following developments in the Sahrawi issue, stressing the importance of respecting human rights and supporting peaceful processes that enable peoples to achieve their legitimate right to self-determination.
