Shaheed El Hafed, 6 November 2026 (SPS) – Member of the National Secretariat, President of the National Council, Bashir Mustapha Sayed, chaired a plenary session of the Council on Thursday devoted to reviewing the latest developments in the Sahrawi cause, in light of the UN Security Council's failure to adopt either of the two competing draft resolutions concerning the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

The political and legal briefing examined developments in the Security Council's approach to the Sahrawi question, as well as shifts in the US position towards endorsing the Moroccan proposal and the resulting implications for the UN settlement process, which is based on international legitimacy and guarantees the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination.

The President of the National Council also reviewed the significance of the Security Council's failure to adopt either draft resolution, highlighting the divisions among major powers over the future and mandate of MINURSO, amid the current international situation and its repercussions for efforts to complete the decolonization process.

The session featured discussions and contributions from members of the National Council, who raised questions about the challenges facing the current phase and stressed the importance of keeping abreast of international developments, strengthening the role of national institutions in monitoring the Sahrawi cause, and informing public opinion about its various dimensions and implications.

The session forms part of the National Council's mandate to follow developments in the national cause and deepen institutional debate on its latest developments at the regional and international levels.
