Navarra (Spain), February 22, 2026 (SPS) – The 29th Conference of the Joint Parliamentary Groups “Peace and Freedom for the People of Western Sahara,” held over the past two days at the Parliament of Navarra, adopted a declaration supporting the United Nations-led political process aimed at reaching a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution that guarantees the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, according to the official website of the Parliament of Navarra.
In this context, the conference urged the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to expand its mandate to include the monitoring, promotion, and protection of human rights. It also called on the United Nations Human Rights Council to appoint a Special Rapporteur for Western Sahara.
The conference’s final document criticized the Spanish government’s position on Western Sahara and reaffirmed its recognition of the Polisario Front as the sole legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people.
The parliamentary groups denounced the illegitimacy of Morocco’s presence in Western Sahara, calling for an end to the occupation and for enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination and independence.
They also demanded the immediate release of Sahrawi political prisoners and an end to systematic human rights violations in the occupied Sahrawi territories. In this regard, they stressed the importance of parliamentary monitoring missions and the need to continue them throughout the current year, 2026.
Furthermore, they rejected any economic or trade agreement that undermines the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and condemned the exploitation of Sahrawi natural resources.
It was agreed that the 30th Conference of the Joint Parliamentary Groups “Peace and Freedom for the People of Western Sahara” will be held in the Canary Islands next year, in 2027.
