Sahrawi Prime Minister commends South Africa’s leadership of G20 and reaffirms support for strengthening Africa’s role in global governance

Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), 14 February 2026 (SPS) – The Prime Minister of the Sahrawi Republic, Mr. Bouchraya Hamoudi Bayoun, praised South Africa and its President, Cyril Ramaphosa, commending the efforts undertaken by his country during its presidency of the Group of Twenty (G20). His remarks were delivered during today’s session of the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit, following the presentation by the South African President of his report on his country’s G20 presidency.

At the outset of his statement, the Prime Minister congratulated the Republic of Angola and its President, João Lourenço, on his successful chairmanship of the African Union over the past year, applauding his effective leadership and direct oversight of the Summit’s proceedings.

He also extended his warm congratulations to President Cyril Ramaphosa for the “exemplary and successful” leadership demonstrated by his country during its presidency of the G20.

The Sahrawi Prime Minister welcomed the comprehensive report presented by the South African President, commending his country’s commitment to representing Africa’s interests at the highest international levels and to ensuring that the continent’s priorities were effectively integrated into the deliberations and outcomes of the G20.

Bouchraya Bayoun stressed that the achievements realized under South Africa’s presidency—particularly in the areas of global economic recovery, sustainable development, climate action, and inclusive growth—reflect a balanced approach that takes into account Africa’s specificities and strengthens the continent’s role in shaping solutions to pressing international challenges.

He also highlighted South Africa’s focus on debt relief for least developed and vulnerable countries, ensuring equitable access to vaccines, and supporting industrialization and trade integration in Africa, considering these efforts as practical expressions of commitment to economic justice and international solidarity.

In conclusion, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the Sahrawi Republic’s support for enhancing Africa’s effective presence within the global governance system and for continuing to defend the continent’s interests across various international decision-making platforms.

It is worth noting that the Sahrawi Republic is participating in the African Union Summit and a number of side events held on its margins with a high-level delegation led by the Prime Minister, accompanied by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Women’s Promotion and Social Affairs, Health, and Finance, as well as the Permanent Representative of the Republic to the African Union, the Deputy Permanent Representative, the Cultural Attaché, and experts.
