AU Regional Deans confer with AUC Chairperson on Summit priorities and Agenda 2063 implementation

Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) 5 February 2026 (SPS)— The Sahrawi Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU) and Dean of the Northern Region, Ambassador Lamine Baali, on Thursday took part in a consultative meeting convened by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, with the AU Deans of the Regions, ahead of the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government.

The meeting brought together the Permanent Representatives of Zimbabwe, Uganda, Senegal, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Sahrawi Republic, in their capacity as Regional Deans, to exchange views on the Union’s priorities, the theme of the upcoming Summit, and the implementation of Agenda 2063.

During the meeting, the Deans discussed with the AUC Chairperson key priorities for the forthcoming Assembly, including the implementation of the Second Ten-Year Implementation Plan of Agenda 2063, sustainable financing of the Union, climate action, debt sustainability, the promotion of intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and financing for health.

The Deans of the Regions commended H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf for his leadership and the early reforms undertaken since assuming office, including progress achieved under the SACA framework. They reaffirmed their collective commitment to advancing the strategic objectives of the African Union.

It is recalled that the Sahrawi Republic holds the position of Dean of the Northern Region of the African Union, which comprises seven countries: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, the Sahrawi Republic, and Tunisia. (SPS)
