Brasilia, 20 January 2026 (SPS) – The 35th Congress of the National Confederation of Education Workers (CNTE) has approved a motion reaffirming its support for the struggle of the Sahrawi people and calling for the decolonization of Western Sahara, the last colony on the African continent.
The motion called, among other things, for an end to the occupation of the territory of Western Sahara and reaffirmed “the need for the Brazilian government, in compliance with International Law, to recognize the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, which is a founding member of the African Union and recognized by 84 countries. Currently, Brazil only recognizes the Polisario Front, its political representation.”
Around two thousand delegates from across the country attended the 35th Congress of the National Confederation of Education Workers (CNTE), which took place in Brasilia between January 15 and 18.
