Brussels (Belgium), 11 December 2025 (SPS) – Sahrawi men and women abroad denounced, in a closing statement following the demonstration organized Wednesday by the diaspora outside the European Parliament in Brussels, the European Union’s attempt to legitimize the illegal plundering of Western Sahara’s natural resources through the signing of a new trade agreement with Morocco.
The final statement of the demonstration—attended by European political figures as well as solidarity organizations and associations—expressed the Sahrawi people’s clear rejection of the continued enabling by some European parties of Morocco’s exploitation of the natural resources of the occupied part of Western Sahara in ways that contradict international law and the rulings of the Court of Justice of the European Union.
The statement recalled that the illegal plundering carried out by the Moroccan authorities, with substantial cooperation from the European Union, forms the basis of the violations suffered by the Sahrawi people, including forced demographic change, discrimination in the labor market, and attacks on cultural identity—all of which ultimately constitute a clear obstacle to the exercise of their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
The statement called on the European Union to adopt a courageous, firm, and consistent position aligned with a foreign policy based on human rights. It is time, the statement stressed, for the EU to stop prioritizing economic interests at the expense of international law.
