Catalonia (Spain), 19 November 2025 (SPS) — Podemos Catalonia issued a statement on 14 November affirming its support for the Sahrawi people and the Polisario Front for their efforts to “make the self-determination referendum and the Sahrawi Republic a reality.”
In its statement, Podemos Catalonia emphasized that “Morocco’s invasion of Western Sahara in the autumn of 1975—50 years ago—and its military occupation aimed at preventing the Sahrawi people from establishing their independent state, ignited a conflict that continues to this day.”
The statement added that “despite the support provided by the United States and France for the invasion of Western Sahara, the Sahrawi people, under the leadership of the Polisario Front, declared the establishment of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in 1976, resisted the Moroccan occupation army with bravery and resilience, and sparked wide international solidarity, including sympathy and support from a large part of Spanish society. This culminated on 29 April 1991 with UN Resolution 690, which recognized the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and established the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).”
The statement stressed that “the Moroccan monarchical system, which is incompatible with democracy, opposed holding the referendum in Western Sahara and dedicated itself to buying support, the latest example being in 2022 with the illegal and biased position of Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, regarding Western Sahara. This position provoked rejection and indignation among a large section of Spanish citizens and even internationally, in addition to the firm rejection of the Sahrawi people.”
Podemos Catalonia concluded its statement by calling on “citizens, the working class, and social and peace-oriented organizations to mobilize in support of the Sahrawi cause until final victory.”
