Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) September 08, 2025 (SPS) – The President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, in his address to African leaders during the second African Climate Summit held today, Monday, in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, the Moroccan occupation responsible for the severe environmental degradation in Western Sahara.

"Our country is facing grave environmental challenges. In addition to the accelerating desertification, there is the war imposed by an illegal occupation that exploits our resources outside the frameworks and laws that protect the environment and climate, including by planting millions of landmines across a vast expanse of Western Sahara, which threatens human life, affects biodiversity, and undermines the way of life of the Sahrawi citizen," stated the President of the Republic in his speech.

Furthermore, the Sahrawi President pointed out that these occupation practices are compounded by the harsh conditions of refuge, which doubly fragilize the ecosystems in the Sahrawi territories, especially in the occupied areas, and limit the capacity of the Sahrawi state to confront climate challenges.
