Brazil, August 10, 2025 (SPS) — The Central Workers' Union of Brazil, during its sixth Congress held in Salvador, Brazil, from the 6th to the 9th of this month, issued a strong recommendation in support of the Sahrawi people’s just struggle for freedom and independence.
The recommendation highlights that "given the legal and political arguments that clearly affirm the necessity of recognizing the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) as the foundation for stability, peace, and justice in North Africa, the Central Workers' Union of Brazil expresses its firm support for the Sahrawi people’s legitimate struggle for freedom and national independence, under the leadership of their rightful representative, the Polisario Front."
In the same context, the Brazilian Workers' Union demanded the release of all Sahrawi political prisoners and an end to Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara, while also condemning the severe human rights violations in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.
The Union urged the United Nations to intensify efforts to enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination and independence through a fair and impartial referendum. It also called for expanding the mandate of MINURSO (UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) to include monitoring and protecting human rights in Western Sahara.
In conclusion, the Union called on Brazil to recognize the Sahrawi Republic (SADR) in support of international law, legitimacy, and the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
The sixth conference of the Brazilian Workers' Union received a message from the Secretary-General of the General Union of Sahrawi Workers, which emphasized the longstanding bilateral relations between the two unions.
