Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) 04 July 2025 (SPS) – The Deputy Representative of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) to Ethiopia and the African Union، Malainin Lakhal، affirmed that the Sahrawi ongoing resistance against the Moroccan occupation is a political and historical duty، stressing that Western Sahara will remain an open front for resistance until victory is achieved.
In a statement to the Algerian Press Service (APS)، the Sahrawi diplomat explained that “the continuation of the Sahrawi resistance is not merely an existential choice for a people fighting for their freedom، but also a moral، humanitarian، and legal obligation to uphold the principles of international law. It embodies the inalienable right of peoples to self-determination and independence، as enshrined in UN charters and in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”
He added that the resistance in Western Sahara، through its resilience and just cause، “acts as a safeguard for international legality against attrition and violations. It is the final barrier against the logic of dominance and forced annexation that the Moroccan occupying state is trying to impose through a policy of colonial fait accompli and violations of human and peoples’ rights.”
Lakhal stressed that “the Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara is not just a short-lived conflict but rather a continuation of an old colonial agenda in new guise، aimed at crushing the will of peoples and entrenching a logic of expansion and domination، in total disregard for their right to freedom and independence.”
He warned that “the most dangerous aspect of this occupation is that it targets not only the Sahrawi people and their rights، but also threatens regional security and stability، fueling tensions.” Moreover، “this occupation constitutes a poisonous colonial dagger in the North-western side of the African continent، undermining its unity and hindering its progress.”
The diplomat also emphasized that “the continuation of the Moroccan occupation is a betrayal of the African Union’s founding principles، which are based on respect for inherited borders and rejection of occupation. It is a blow to every African dream of unity and liberation.”
He affirmed that as long as the Kingdom “persists in denying the Sahrawi people’s rights and insists on the illegal seizure of their land، the continent will remain hostage to colonial calculations that serve only external and opportunistic forces. Development and unity will remain delayed slogans.”
In conclusion، Mr. Malainin Lakhal reiterated that “the continuation of the Sahrawi resistance، in all its legitimate forms، is a political and historical obligation، not only for the Sahrawis، but in defense of Africa’s soul and a just international order that does not reward occupation or suppress freedom.”
He called on all free people around the world to “stand with this just cause and confront the Moroccan project that seeks to normalize occupation as an acceptable practice، in blatant defiance of all human and legal values.”
He concluded that “there will be no free Africa as long as an occupation denies Sahrawis their rights. There will be no peace as long as Rabat continues down the path of expansion and colonialism. Western Sahara will remain an open front for resistance—until victory.” (SPS)
