Lanzarote (Canary Islands), May 28, 2025 (SPS) — The newly elected leader of the Coalición Canaria party, Pedro San Ginés, reaffirmed his unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and freedom in his address to conference attendees.
He described the relationship between the Canary Islands and the Sahrawi people as strong, urging political forces to take a stance to end the suffering of the Sahrawi people, neighbors of the Canary Islands. He also called on Spain to assume its historical and legal responsibility toward its former colony to decolonize the last remaining colony in Africa.
The conference was attended by various political and trade union representatives from across the Canary Islands archipelago, with coverage from local and national media. Among the attendees were representatives of the Sahrawi people, including members of the Sahrawi Community Association in Lanzarote.
It is worth noting that the conference elected Pedro San Ginés, a former parliamentarian known for his support of the Sahrawi cause and their struggle for freedom and self-determination. Mr. San Ginés was born in the Sahrawi city of El Aaiún during the Spanish colonial era and has previously visited the Sahrawi refugee camps.
